Question: Such a thing as cat birth control?
(Posted by: on 2009-05-09 13:49:20)
Is there such a thing as cat birth control? we'd like our cat to have kittens again next year but do not want her to have them when she comes into season as would be hard to find homes and we don't want her to have them so soon after her first litter. |

First of all, I think you should get your cat sterilized. That is absolutely the best and most healthy for your cat, and there is always too many cats/ kittens and too few good homes. To let a cat get kittens just because they are cute, I think is disgusting. You need to think about the fact that an unsterilized cat and it's kittens might make more than 100 cats. You need to find GOOD homes for these. Everyday several kittens are executed. And that is absolutely not only in a human way at the veterinarian. I've heard too many stories of cats being boiled alive, thrown acid on, getting their eyes cut out etc. This is happening everywhere, also in your neighbourhood. Also, did you know, that 60 % of the male cats has HIV? By lowering the amount of cats, it will be easier to get really good homes for the cats. If you want another cat in your home you could help an animal shelter by adopting one there. If you still don't see that sterilization is the best for everyone, there is birth control pills and syringe. Then I would recommend syringe, which the veterinarian give your cat every third months. Pills you will need to give your cat every week. Unfortunately, there is quite a big risk for cancer when you give your cat birth control pills/ syringe. |

Book her into a cattery when she next comes into season so that she cannot come into contact with any tom cats. |

I dont think so no, I think there is some kind of law in the UK now where if you have a tom cat that is going outdoors you have to have him neutered. |

Other than spaying and neutering. Nothing I've heard of is fool proof. My kids tried the *panties* they were off her almost before she went out the door. So best of luck and let me know what you find out. |

No, that's a pretty ridiculous thing. I'm not saying you are, I'm just saying whoever told you that is a bit mixed up... Only humans can take contraception pills. The only way to be sure that your cat won't be impregnated is to get her spayed, but then that eliminates the possibility of her having kittens altogether. There are other forms of 'birth control' that your vet can explain to you. Also, why do you want your cat to have kittens if you're just going to give them away? That's horrible, and very irresponsible and ignorant behavior. Your cat has already had a litter, so you're just contributing to the unnecessary overpopulation of unwanted kittens, which is, in my honest opinion, cruelty. Because even if your cats find homes, that's one less home for a poor shelter cat who has been waiting for a good one. It's ridiculous to be manipulating a cat just for the sole purpose of dealing out kittens. I highly urge you to reconsider it. I can't give you any better advice than that. |

While there is a birth control method similar to depo-provera in the works (only, for cats, it works for several years), it's for the catch-fix-release program with feral cats. Spay your cat. Period. If you want to foster some kittens, adopt a pregnant queen from the ASPCA, I'm sure they'd be grateful!! |
