Crazy cat problems (furniture)?

Question: Crazy cat problems (furniture)?

(Posted by: Carol on 2010-07-03 06:39:55)

We just got this new leather couch that cost alot of money and our cat for some reason randomly spazzes out and fluffs up her tail and runs wild sometimes though she runs across the couch with her nails out and makes rips what should we do without declawing her? and yes she has a scratching post with catnip she uses she also attacks our older cat making her scream and growl

Get some Ssscat units and place them around and on the couch when you're not around.

My cats will do the same thing from time to time. It's a "cat thing " and very random. There's nothing you can do about the couch unless you get the cat de-clawed. With a dog you can train him or her to stay off the couch but with cats....they do what they want when they want. You can't "train " them to stay off furniture. You may want to try one thing but it involves water and it would probably harm the leather. When a cat is doing something they shouldn't like scratching or jumping on a piece of furniture or counter......they say to spray the cat with a spray bottle with plain water in it to discourage them from the unwanted behavior since most cats dislike being in or sprayed with water.

I have the same problem with my cat. He 'randomly spazzes out' too and attacks the couch and the dog. Claws fully out. I tried everything, spraying him with water, the deterrent spray, multiple scratching posts. I found that cat nip made his episodes worse. I finally got him a tendonectomy. It is surgery, but it is more humane. The claws stay intact, but they can't extend them anymore. My vet said that it is better for older cats, less recovery time, no stitches, less pain.

I'm sure you'll get lots of answers about declawing, which I don't regard as an option. Let's put it this way: Your older cat feels threatened when this cat attacks. WIth any luck, the older cat still has some claws to defend herself. One day this problematic cat will be the old cat, and she should have the same defenses. I agree that this wacky burst of energy is just something a lot of cats do. Aside from your couch damage, I have to say that it's kind of funny. I always have to laugh when my 2 guys freak out and run wildly around the house. Matter of fact, sometimes one of these guys rips up a roll of toilet paper. I just have to crack up when I find the aftermath of this. I've got 4 suggestions: 1) Cover your couch. I know it's somewhat of a band-aid solution, but it can avoid some damage as you try to divert your cat from this behavior. As for diverting your cat... 2) Move the couch to a different location out of the way of the rampage. For instance, if she bolts down the hall and leaps onto the couch, try to remove the couch from that route. I think we should call that FANG SHUI... heh, heh, heh... Sorry, I couldn't resist. 3) Get kitty a really nice piece of cat furniture that can be her final destination when she goes crazy. My cat runs down the stairs every morning when I take their food down there, and he leaps up on his scratcher and starts ripping away at it. I ALWAYS praise him for that, and give him a nice petting as he is scratching. I'll attach a link to somewhere you can go for some nice cat furniture or maybe a couple more scratching posts. As usual, I recommend a post with genuine 3/ 8 Brazilian sisal rope on it. 4) To calm the older cat, who seems to be really stressing out, try a pheromone spray called Feliway. It's a bit pricey, but a little spray goes a long way. I've had some success with a cat stress situation with this product. I know this is a frustrating problem, a little creativity will avoid a lot of pain. Good luck. Cat furniture: felinedesign.net/ b24.htm#use Pheromone Spray: feliway.com
