Cat toys? i'm wasting my money on them....?

Question: Cat toys? i'm wasting my money on them....?

(Posted by: The Internet Is Yours on 2010-07-21 11:19:11)

I adopted a cat a few months back. He's a tiger strip tabby a little over a year now about 15lbs. Anyway...I buy all these toys and he only plays with "water bottle caps " ...he loves them...so my question is what other NONE cat toys are there that you recommend. I bought him a big a$$ ball of yarn (seriously the ball is HUGE about the size of a car tire)...he's afraid of it I think b/ c it's so large I let him bite on my hand. He's learned not to claw the sh*t out of me when I pick him up now. Another thing....those damn scratch pads....how do I get him to use them before he claws up all my sh*t? I bought the pads and all and cat nip spray (hell I even bought the damn plant) ...rubbed it on the pads and he looks at the pad and laughs. I don't want to have him de clawed. My last cat was but I took him in full grown set in his ways. I don't want this cat to go insane on me if I declaw him. plus I want him to keep his claws to attack intruders. help a bruh out!!!

Maybe your cat just likes simple little toys like the water bottle caps! and maybe for something to scratch on give him an old muddy shoe

Cats prefer to play with toys that are small enough to bat around--save your $$$ and make crumpled paper balls for him and save the soda caps as well, those he will use. The scratching pads are all too small for most cats. A vertical scratching post is better. We have a cat tree in the living room and they all use that. And put the yarn away, if he eats the stuff it can be life threatening in his intestines.

Often, the best cat toys are the boxes they came in. Perhaps the biggest cat "toys " in my house are the cat trees. They also have sisal posts, that are heavily used. Cats like to chase and swat things. So even a wad of paper can be popular. Wadded up paper coffee filters are a hit around my place. Not all cats are sensitive to catnip. It is inherited, and almost half of all cats show no interest in catnip. Cardboard scratchers are often universally liked. And some cats go nuts over the wave curl scratcher (see link) available at many places, and some ignore them. None of mine really bother the furniture, as they have a variety of surfaces provided. If he scratches furniture edges, double sided sticky tape can be effective. If armrests, etc., then dusting with talcum powder works. Don't let him bite your hand. You don't want him to consider parts of your body (hands, feet) as toys. And at 15 pounds, that could be considered quite a bit overweight, depending on your cat. Ask your vet about that the next annual check up.

We don't like cat toys because we find it funny how you humans buy toys for us when we simply could use stuff around the house! that's our way of teaching you not to waste your money even if you don't see the results you were expecting the first time! we are just fine!! HOWEVER, feel free to offer the the liver deliver! MRAW MRAW MEEOWW!! = ^.^=

Put the scratch pad out in the dustbin or the next garage sale - they aren't worth the powder to blow them to Hell. Get the cat a medium to hard wood scratching block. Mine use a block of wood that I merely set on the basement floor and the love the stiff coco mat at the front door. They have never scratched at the furniture in this house. Both my cats are fully clawed and we have never trimmed their nails. If I were to tell you how we stopped the biting I would be banned from this site and have the SPCA banging on my door (just joking; our cats just don't bite). We have a large dog and when the cat used to bite him he would give them a nip. That cured them right quick. Decent cat toys - plastic bottlecaps and tin foil balls. They quickly lose interest in the commercial cat toys. Some owners use those mini lasers but I can't recommend that for safety reasons.

You can apparetly get claw caps that are complete safe to put on your cats claws - they can still retract their claws - I havent used them personally but heard that they are good. Also, try making your own cat toys - my cat will play with anything that rolls across the floor when she hits it. Get a tall scratching post - maybe one with different levels and put it in front of what ever he keeps clawing. When you see him scratching your furniture then gently pick him up and put his paws onto the scratch post. Good luck.

Sometimes cats just like the simple things to play with. When my cats scratch something they shouldn't I spray them with a little squirt bottle of water. Maybe you could try different forms of catnip and put them on the scratching pads? Have you tried the dried catnip flakes? A lot of cats go nuts of those. Or maybe you could put the bottle caps on the pads? If your cat is satisfied with the bottle caps I wouldn't bother buying more things he won't like. Toys to suggest to you though-- a toy furry mouse that has a real mouse sound in it when it's bumped, marbles (they are hard and roll around like the bottle caps), a laser pointer.. just some ideas. Another thought on the scratching problem-- maybe you could buy or make a post that is wood or covered in carpet for your cat to scratch rather than the cardboard pads. Good luck!

My cat's fave toy is a shoelace

Your cat is just like my step moms cat he has so many toys but he only plays with this one toy which is shaped like a horse and you can put catnip in it you should go to this link petsmart.com/ product/ index.jsp?productId= 2754330 and you will see the cat nip we get for my cat but warning catnip is like drugs for cats the get really crazy for like 15 minutes and then the fall asleep but it not bad for the cat like drugs are for people and you can put it on scratching posts too the cat scratches at the post to get the cat nip so get the cat nip and put it on the toys and i gurantee your cat will play with it i hope this helps good luck

Cats don't like all the expensive toy crap. They usually go for the cheap things like bottle caps and a shoelace. They are afraid of anything bigger than them, so you don't wanna try to get things that size. And for the scratching things, its kinda hard to make cats older than one to learn, but it IS possible. If you catch them scratching on the couch or whatever, you smack them on their side close to their butt. You then pick them up and put them on a scratching pole.

Here is a list of items you can use to stop a cat from scratching: A bottle/ can with something noisy in it (like pennies) Air (I use a balloon pump) Aluminum foil Anything citrus smelling (spray/ rub in on whatever they’re starching) Double sided tape (or Packaging tape upside down if it's on a flat surface) Dumb Cat Anti-Marking & Cat Spray Remover (Spray-Petco-This one is for urine) Four Paws Cat and Kitten Repellent (Spray-Petco) Four Paws Keep Off Indoor and Outdoor Dog and Cat Repellent (Spray-Petco) Fresh Kitty Furniture Protectors Gingerroot Packaging tape Pet Botanics Bitter End Training Aid (Spray-Petco) Pet Organics No Scratch! for Cats (Spray-Petco) Pet Organics No-Mark for Cats (Spray-Petco-This one is for urine) Pet Organics No-Stay Furniture Spray for Cats (Spray-Petsmart) Scratching post Simple Solution Indoor/ Outdoor Repellent for Dogs and Cats (Spray-Petco) Softpaws Spray that stops them (there all different kinds) Spray that stops them (there all different kinds-just go to petco.com type in “scratch spray”) Trim their nails back once a week Water bottle spray Also the scratching post you have might not be tall enough. A proper scratching post needs to be as tall as the cat (about 32”). A cat needs to be able to stretch it's entire body out on the scratching post so they can properly stretch their all their muscles.

Here's some tips that I mentioned to someone yesterday that might be helpful in your situation: NEVER hit the cat. They will associate the pain or insult with whatever they are looking at, generally it is you. When kitty starts to claw up stuff, do not yell. He doesn't know what that means. A firm "NO " will get his attention. And at that same moment when you catch him scratching something inappropriate, pick him up, take him over to the scratching post, and rub his paws gently over it a few times. He WILL get the picture, but you must be diligent about this. I have an 18 pound ocicat that I trained so well with this technique that he NEVER claws the furniture, and all I have to do is point at the scratching post and he will go to it immediately. Guests are very amused by this. :) BTW, as a last resort, you might want to try double sided tape, and put it over the spots where kitty claws the most. They don't like the feeling of double sided tape. As far as toys, as I recommended to someone yesterday, check out haretodaygonetomorrow.com. That website has rabbits' paws and ears that cats love to play with, and then they can eat them when they are bored/ done playing with it. And they are super cheap for a big bag of stuff. I know, it sounds gross, but my ocicat LOVES the paws and ears. There is no need to declaw. Just a little patience and time will teach kitty what is appropriate to scratch, and what is not. Let me know if you have any other questions. P.S. - Don't let him bite your hand. Bad habits die hard, and nothing worse than having him bite a guest. When he bites, just hiss like a snake, and he will learn to stop.
