Question: One of my cats broke her arm somehow.?
(Posted by: normal_cody on 2010-03-09 21:24:49)
Its one of her front arms. she is eating well and finding comfortable positions to rest and sleep in. she is starting to use the arm again, kinda limping on it. im afraid i have waited too long to have it reset. she is going to the vet tomorrow morn. do you think after two days they will re break it before they set it? and if so, will they "knock her out "? |

The need for "setting " the bone depends on what type of fracture has occurred. Only displaced fractures (the bone has actually separated/ split into two distinct parts and at least one part is protruding into the surrounding soft tissues) require setting. Nondisplaced fractures (the bone has cracked but has remained in its original position) don't require setting. With people that have displaced fractures that require setting, the doctor anesthetizes the area, so I'm sure that a vet would do the same thing for an animal. As for how long you've waited to get your cat to the vet, I don't think that waiting two days has done any further damage. It hasn't been enough time for the fracture to heal enough on its own to prevent the proper treatment. |

I think we need to investigate the fact that your cat has an arm! |

If it has only been two days there may be a chance that they can just set it. If they have to re-break the arm I'm pretty sure they will give her a sedative for the pain. I believe you can also request that sort of thing if they don't just do it for her. Don't worry about it, as long as you are going to the vet you are doing the right thing for her. |

The first thing they'll probably do is take x-rays to see where it's broken and then decide from there whether or not they'll need to reset it or do surgery. and if they do end up resetting it or doing some kind of surgery on it they'll most likely put her under anesthesia first, they might even do that to take the x-rays. Cats can be difficult to work with when they're awake. |
