Is it safe to leave my cats on their own for 4 days?

Question: Is it safe to leave my cats on their own for 4 days?

(Posted by: rawr on 2010-03-10 00:37:06)

I will be vacationing with my family and initially i was very reluctant to go but my mum insisted since everything's already paid for. She's not a cat person and doesn't understand why i can't just leave them with some food and water and they'll be fine. Is she right? With sufficient food and water, will they be fine? I have 2 cats, one a very independent 7 year old male cat, the other a female cat (not too sure of her age she's a rescued stray) who sleeps on my lap everyday and licks my face a lot :P I've never left my female cat alone for more than a day before and i'm worried about her. Will they survive? Won't they get bored? They're both indoor cats and they're allowed outside once a day. Will they be scratching at the door? If it's ok for me to leave them, what extra precautions should i take, besides leaving them enough food and water? Wow.. i really need to think this through. There's nobody to check in on them. So i've considered local pet hotels. Problem is, the cost, and also the sudden change of environment. I'll try to research more online.

They will be fine trust me. I have a very needy cat who wants attention all the time. He's the type that wants you to sit there and watch him eat. I've left him home for a week and he was fine. Just make sure your cats have plenty of food and water and a clean litter tray before you leave. You'll be surprised at how independent they are. There's no real precautions you need to take. Some entertainment like a scratching post and a few toys will be sufficient. If you're really worried, then just get someone to drop in on them, but honestly it's not necessary. Enjoy your vacation.

Nope get someone to come in and check on them

That is a very bad idea...have someone you know take care of them or at least check in on them once a day to make sure they have food and water and their litter is clean. Pets cannot take care of themselves in an urban setting. Do not neglect them!

They will be fine, just that they may want to get out and in the process, scratch your stuff. 4 days is not really that long so they should be fine. Make sure they got enough space to roam and it will be good.

No, I wouldn't recommend leaving cats on their own for 4 days. 24 hours is pretty much the limit, after that you really need to have someone come over and check up on them, make sure everything is okay, and give them fresh food and water, and make sure their litter is clean. Do you have a close friend or family who could stop by? Your cats will be fine as far as not getting much attention or being allowed outside (leave them some toys out and they have each other to play with), but for safety reasons you really should have someone check up on them every day while you are away. Just leaving them for that amount of time with what you think may be enough food and water isn't a good idea.

Buy a scratching post, lots of cat toys, and make sure they have enough food and water (dont forget the litter box :))

Cats are not like dogs. They dont need constant supervision. Just leave them two or three litter boxes, depending on how big the cats are, and a large supply of food. Also remove any items that could pose a hazard to them. IE dangerous potted plants or anything else they could eat that could harm them. On the third day, have someone come in and take a look around. Dont worry to much, theyre not babies, they will survive, they will be fine. They will miss you, but then, that wont kill them, will it?

I wouldn't risk it - they will be fine UNLESS something goes wrong. The trouble is you have no way of guaranteeing that nothing will go wrong! Couldn't you put them in a boarding cattery for a few days or persuade a friend or neighbour to pop in daily?

I have 2 cats and when I go on holiday I leave them alone in the house. They both have access to the garden and a neighbour/ friend I trust comes in every day to check on them and feed them. They are always fine. If you can find someone who could check on them it would be best. I am assuming that they will be using a litter tray. This will need to be cleaned out. If you cant find anyone to help out then I suggest that you make sure that the house is as comfortable and safe for them as possible and that they have their favourite things around them. They will miss you and their routine but they will be ok because they are at home in familiar surroundings. I hope that you can relax and enjoy your vacation with your family. essortment.com/ hobbies/ pettipsleaving_skil.htm catchannel.com/ experts/ marilyn-krieger/ do-cats-get-lonely.aspx
