Question: Should i get another cat to join my 2 cats?
(Posted by: Hotcakes on 2010-03-10 02:29:13)
There is a kitten/ young cat needing a good home. It was found and taken in by an elderly couple and I am going around to see her tonight. The only thing I am concerned about it that I have 2 cats Dodge (Male 4 years) Silky (Female, 1.5 years) and they took quite a while to settle down with each other, and Dodge displayed slight jealous behaviour for a while. Even now they have their moments where they meet on the stairs and swat each other. So I am worried that they both might not take well to another cat in the house, any advice? I would hate Dodge ( as he is an outdoor cat to run away cos he feels threatened) Silky is an indoor cat, so I am not as worried about her, and also they both have they own places in the house, Silky has downstairs lounge and my daughter's bedroom and Dodge has my bedroom, and they both meet in the kitchen for food! and they rarely venture into each other's territories so where will the new cat go?? |

Sure. There are so many lovable cats that are homeless -- if you can give one of them a home, you are a good person. I am assuming your two kitties are spayed/ neutered? (If not, the war will NEVER end.) But if they are both fixed, they will come to terms with the new cat. Eventually. Cats have different personalities -- one may take to the newbie, the other may not. Or neither may take to the newbie, but it will find its own way when it knows YOU are on its side. |

Your cats are about the same age as mine were when I got my third cat . Shelby, my oldest had nothing to do with her, still doesn't . But she is antisocial and only likes to be around me , but Liberty, my middle cat fell in love with Goat (mom named her lol) and now they are best friends . Maybe the new cat will go into one of the other cats territories and make friends with them ? (: I really hope this helps and it isn't just me babbling . |

Some cats can lvie happily together so in time yours may take to the new kitty... my personal opinion is dont risk it. As you have said your male still gets jelous over your female, imagine how he will be with another new cat in his home. Your female may take better to the new cat if she is fine with living with your male cat.... its always best to have 2females to one male. If you have 2males & only 1female they will fight for her attentinon etc. If you do take on the other kitty it will take time & hard work... there are bound to be a few fights to show who is boss etc from both your male & female cat to the new one. In time there is nothing stopping them from getting along. In my opinion if you are unsure then maybe it isnt the right thing to do?? Think of the cats both yours & the other..... |
