It was a spontaneous mutation that someone found in a cat that he found in the rain. She was pregnant and two of the kittens had the same short legs. He started breeding her with the idea of producing short legged cats, but the breed was initially plagued by some very serious medical problems--the kitten mortality was tremendously high, there were problems with open palettes (where the bones don't fuse in the roof of the mouth) and other issues. Over time the medical issues have pretty much been worked out, but the breed still has more than it's fair share of problems. You can probably find out the timeline and more info over on Wikipedia about the breed.

This is a dwarf breed of cat. Dwarf animals typically have shorter legs, and can have other mutations and bone and joint, etc problems. There are also dwarf animals in most species- some of the dwarf breeds of dog include the Welsh Corgi, Dachshund, and the Basset Hound. Originally, the Munchkin would have been a mutation- a naturally occuring dwarf cat that was then bred to create more dwarf cats, and then a breed and a breed standard. Dwarf animals can have some health problems- just like dwarfism in humans- so it is important that you do your research, and choose animals that have been health and temprement tested from a reputable breeder before considering to choose your pet.

They are dwarf kitties! Just like humans have genetic mutations that create dwarfs, or people of short stature, animals do too! Breeders have isolated kitties that carry this gene and breed for the short legged kitties. Not all kitties in the litter will be munchkins, you can have average height kitties too. Aren't they amazing?

It's a mutation. They're poorly bred unhealthy animals. Unless you want to spend a lot on buying one and then the vet bills and eventual heartbreak when they die early, I would avoid buying one. Breeders of "munchkin " cats are selfish and only care for your money not the health of their cats and the offspring. mouchois.blogspot.com/ Check that blog out. It's a "munchkin " cat's blog. That cat is lucky to have such a good owner and one with so much money. He'd be dead otherwise.
